I knew a guy who had a goal to own a parking lot. He thought highly of the idea of sitting there and have people bring you money. His eventual goal was to buy a parking lot machine so he could then sit at home and watch TV while the machine collected money for him.

Could be worse.

Definitely. I mean, at least he had a plan, right? The rest of us (who are not yet unemployed) are still working for "the man", being corporate slaves. In the meantime, he's watching TV. Maybe he had it right all along. :P

My dream has always been to own a couple of self storage facilities, and hire people to manage them for me for ca. $40k a year + free housing. Great way to hold real estate until better times, and, in the meantime, tens of millions of people losing their houses and downsizing into rented rooms in shared housing situations are going to need a place to put all their stuff. Solid business, pretty low maintenance compared to other rental property types.

I’ve had this same thought lately. A few times I caught myself not minding this recent life of sauntering around the house. Had me thinking how low of an income I could take and make it happen. Sadly, far more than any interest on my assets would afford.

There’s a Fargo (TV show ) quote about parking lots, self storage and cemeteries all being the same basic business.

A friend of a friend owns a large house on a canal that links to the inter coastal waterway in Florida with a boat dock containing three slips. He doesn’t own a boat himself, but he rents out all the slips and allows the boat owners to walk around the side of his house to access them. He always describes it as “... imagine someone walks up and hands you a ten- dollar bill single every day. Now imagine three people doing that every singe day...”

I think my goals in life could be achieved for about 50k a year. Unfortunately I make half that.
